How can faculty create a link to an article in an e-journal or to an ebook from their GauchoSpace course site. What is the best link to use?

Answer

In order for your students to have access from off campus, the best practice is to use a proxy-prefixed link to the resource.  There are a variety of ways to do this:

  • Use the permalink to the resource record in UC Library Search.  Look for the “permalink” icon just below the call number.  Links to e-resources from UC Library Search will ask the students to log into the proxy server before taking them to the full text.

  • Access the electronic resource while using the proxy server.  Use the “permalink” or other link sharing tool at the e-journal or e-book site.  The link it provides should include the prefix for the UCSB proxy server in the URL.

  • Make your own proxied link by adding this prefix just before “http” or “https” in an unproxied link:  https://proxy.library.ucsb.edu/login?url=
