Why do I need to use the proxy server or VPN (virtual private network) to access electronic resources such as databases, e-books, and e-journals?
Answer
The Library subscribes to these electronic resources so that our students, faculty, and staff can access them. Databases are programmed to allow access based upon the IP (internet protocol) address of your computer. When you use the proxy server or the VPN, you temporarily acquire a UCSB IP address so that your computer will be recognized as eligible to use the resource.
